At least 1,000 dead as massive earthquake hits Afghanistan, Pakistan

According to reports, an earthquake that jolted eastern Afghanistan early on Wednesday morning claimed at least 1,000 lives and injured over 1,500 people. According to estimates, the death toll is anticipated to rise as news from isolated mountain villages trickles in. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake, which was described as the deadliest in twenty years, had a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale and tremors could even be felt in Pakistan.

The epicentre was located approximately 44 km from Khost city in Afghanistan and was 51 km deep, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). According to Pakistan's meteorological authority, earthquakes were detected in Islamabad and the eastern region of Punjab.

More than 1,500 people were hurt in the incident in Paktika province, according to the Afghan Bakhtar News Agency. More than 1,000 individuals died as a result of their injuries.

According to Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, the leader of the Taliban, who was quoted by Reuters early this morning, the majority of fatalities were reported in the Paktika province, where 100 people were confirmed dead and 250 injured. Khost and Nangarhar, both in eastern Afghanistan, both reported some fatalities. While this was happening, the state-run Bakhtar news agency said that rescuers were flying in by helicopter.

A team should be sent to "avoid additional calamity," according to Bilal Karimi, a deputy spokesperson for the Taliban government. Haibatullah Akhundzadah, the supreme leader of the Taliban, also made a rare appeal to the international neighbourhood and humanitarian groups, pleading with them "to help the Afghan people afflicted by this enormous catastrophe and to spare no effort."

The Taliban's appeal was made at a time when the world community had mostly abandoned Afghanistan following the seizure of the nation by the Taliban last year and the haphazard US military departure from the longest war in US history.
